Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a genetic disorder causing high LDL cholesterol.
  • Statins and PCSK9 inhibitors are common FH treatments but can cause side effects.
  • A 31-year-old woman with heterozygous FH had to discontinue standard therapies due to adverse effects.

Observation:

  • The patient received inclisiran, a novel therapy, in 2021.
  • This marked the first reported use of inclisiran in Denmark.
  • The patient experienced no adverse events during inclisiran treatment.

Findings:

  • Inclisiran therapy led to a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol levels.
  • The patient tolerated inclisiran well, with no reported side effects.
  • This case demonstrates inclisiran's efficacy in managing FH.

Implications:

  • Inclisiran shows promise as an effective and well-tolerated treatment for heterozygous FH.
  • This case expands treatment options for FH patients intolerant to other therapies.
  • Further research into inclisiran for FH management is warranted.
