Multiple Comparison Tests01:13

Multiple Comparison Tests

Multiple comparison test, abbreviated as MCT, is a post hoc analysis generally performed after comparing multiple samples with one or more tests. An MCT will help identify a significantly different sample among multiple samples or a factor among multiple factors.
It would be easy to compare two samples using a significance alpha level of 0.05. In other words, there is only one sample pair to be compared. However, it would be difficult to identify a significantly different sample if the number...

Area of Science:

  • Animal Science
  • Poultry Nutrition
  • Feed Additives

Background:

  • Methionine (Met) supplementation is crucial in broiler feeds.
  • Debate exists regarding the nutritional equivalence of methionine hydroxy analogue (MHA) versus DL-methionine.
  • Current recommendations suggest MHA is 65% as effective as DL-methionine.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a meta-analysis evaluating the efficacy of MHA relative to DL-methionine in broiler nutrition.
  • To challenge the existing 65% efficacy recommendation for MHA.
  • To identify factors influencing MHA's nutritional value.

Main Methods:

  • A literature search identified 25 publications with 95 data sets.
  • Hedges' g effect sizes were computed for meta-analysis.
  • Data were subgrouped by broiler strain, diet type, data origin, and MHA product.

Main Results:

  • The meta-analysis revealed very low heterogeneity and small effect sizes.
  • DL-methionine results were not significantly different from MHA.
  • No significant impact was observed across various subgroups or dietary methionine+cysteine levels.

Conclusions:

  • MHA products are nutritionally equivalent to DL-methionine on a weight-to-weight basis of 100:65.
  • This ratio is applicable across diverse production conditions without compromising broiler performance.
  • The findings support a direct weight-to-weight replacement of MHA with DL-methionine at the 65% level.
