  • Severe to profound sensorineural HL is primarily treated with cochlear implants (CIs).
  • CIs represent a highly successful prosthetic intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess oral language development in pediatric patients with prelingual deafness who received cochlear implants.
  • To evaluate outcomes at a specialized HL treatment center in southern Brazil.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study analyzing medical records from January 2009 to December 2018.
  • Language development assessed via speech therapy consultations.
  • 152 pediatric patients with cochlear implants were included.

Main Results:

  • The average age at cochlear implantation was 41 months (SD: ±15).
  • 36% of children utilized oral language as their primary communication method.
  • Earlier cochlear implantation correlated with better oral language development compared to sign language users or those without developed language.
