Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Pediatric orthopedics
  • Surgical innovation

Background:

  • Epiphysiodesis aims to control physeal growth for managing limb length discrepancies and angular deformities.
  • Current gold-standard techniques involve mechanical physeal ablation, requiring imaging and causing bone loss.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and evaluate a novel 'targeted epiphysiodesis' technique using needle arthroscopy.
  • To assess the efficacy and safety of minimally invasive epiphysiodesis.

Main Methods:

  • A case report detailing the application of needle arthroscopy for targeted epiphysiodesis.
  • Direct visualization via a 1.9 mm needle arthroscope to precisely ablate the physis.

Main Results:

  • Successful epiphysiodesis was achieved with no surgical complications.
  • The technique minimized radiation exposure and unnecessary loss of healthy bone stock.

Conclusions:

  • Needle arthroscopy represents a promising, minimally invasive alternative for epiphysiodesis.
  • This approach offers reduced morbidity compared to traditional mechanical ablation methods.
