Design Example: Alignment of a Road Line Using GIS

47
The alignment of a road line using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a critical process in civil engineering, combining advanced technology with practical decision-making. This methodology begins with the collection of geospatial data, including information on land cover, geomorphology, drainage patterns, slope, and contour details. Such data is typically acquired through satellite imagery and GIS tools, offering a comprehensive understanding of the terrain.Once the data is gathered, it...

Adherens Junctions01:24

Adherens Junctions

4.7K
Strong contact points between adjacent cells anchor them to each other, forming tissues. Such anchoring junctions are of two types –  adherens junctions and desmosomes. Adherens junctions are abundant in tissues such as  epithelium and endothelium, forming a continuous zone of adhesion called the adhesion belt. In other tissues, such as  heart muscle, they appear as clusters, linking the cells to produce coordinated heart muscle contraction.

Area of Science:

  • Computer Science
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering

Background:

  • Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) rely on roadside units (RSUs) for efficient communication.
  • Optimizing RSU deployment is crucial for enhancing network performance, particularly delay.
  • Existing RSU deployment strategies lack specific optimization for complex highway intersection environments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a novel RSU deployment strategy for highway intersections.
  • To minimize expected event reporting delays in VANETs at intersections.
  • To introduce a new algorithm for implementing the proposed deployment scheme.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a probabilistic model to characterize events around highway intersections.
  • Analytically determined expected event reporting delays for highway segments and intersections.
  • Proposed a new RSU deployment scheme and a cooperative walking algorithm for its implementation.

Main Results:

  • The proposed RSU deployment strategy significantly reduces event reporting delays at highway intersections.
  • The cooperative walking algorithm effectively implements the optimized RSU deployment.
  • Performance evaluation shows superiority over uniform deployment and balloon methods.

Conclusions:

  • The novel RSU deployment strategy effectively addresses the unique challenges of highway intersections.
  • The proposed method offers a significant improvement in delay performance for VANETs.
  • This research provides a practical solution for enhancing traffic safety and efficiency through optimized RSU placement.
