Cancer Clinical Library Databases (CCLDs) offer a standardized approach to cancer research data in Korea. These databases aim to improve multicenter cancer studies by overcoming limitations of previous common data models.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Biomedical Informatics
- Data Science
Background:
- Common data models (CDMs) are widely used in healthcare but have limited application in cancer research.
- Standardized cancer-specific databases are needed to facilitate robust multicenter cancer studies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the development and implementation of Cancer Clinical Library Databases (CCLDs) in Korea.
- To establish a standardized cancer data resource for research under the Korea-Clinical Data Utilization Network for Research Excellence (K-CURE) project.
Main Methods:
- Fifteen hospitals and fourteen academic associations are constructing CCLDs for 10 cancer types.
- Experts define and standardize key clinical data items, creating a unified schema.
- Comprehensive patient data (diagnosis, treatment, outcomes) are collected annually with Six Sigma quality control.
Main Results:
- CCLDs are being developed for 10 primary cancer types across leading Korean institutions.
- Data security is ensured through pseudonymization and a closed analysis environment.
- A K-CURE portal facilitates researcher access pending IRB and Data Review Board approval.
Conclusions:
- CCLDs represent a pioneering, standardized cancer-specific database in Korea.
- This initiative is expected to overcome limitations of existing CDMs.
- CCLDs will provide a valuable resource for multicenter cancer research in Korea.
