[Prostatic tissue levels of ceftizoxime].

    Summary

Ceftizoxime (CZX) concentrations in prostatic tissue exceeded the minimal inhibitory concentration for most gram-negative bacteria. This suggests CZX is effective for bacterial prostatitis and post-operative infections.

    Area of Science:

    • Pharmacology
    • Urology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is a common condition in aging men.
    • Bacterial infections can complicate BPH and prostatic surgeries.
    • Understanding antibiotic penetration into prostatic tissue is crucial for effective treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine Ceftizoxime (CZX) concentrations in prostatic tissue and serum.
    • To evaluate the ratio of CZX levels in prostatic tissue to serum (p/s ratio).
    • To assess the potential clinical efficacy of CZX in treating prostatic infections.

    Main Methods:

    • 130 patients with BPH undergoing transurethral resection (TUR) were included.
    • A 2-gram intravenous dose of CZX was administered prior to TUR.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • CZX concentrations were measured in prostatic tissue and serum at various time points (30 min to 8 hours).
  • Main Results:

    • Mean CZX levels in prostatic tissue ranged from 47.2 µg/g at 30 minutes to 3.04 µg/g at 8 hours.
    • The prostatic tissue/serum (p/s) ratio increased over time, reaching 74.5% at 8 hours.
    • Prostatic CZX concentrations achieved the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) for 80% of tested gram-negative bacteria, excluding P. aeruginosa.

    Conclusions:

    • Ceftizoxime demonstrates significant penetration into prostatic tissue.
    • Achieved concentrations suggest clinical effectiveness against common gram-negative pathogens in bacterial prostatitis.
    • CZX is a potential therapeutic option for bacterial infections following prostatic surgery.
