Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Black children with autism and their families experience significant disparities in clinical care and services.
Limited research has focused on the perspectives of the Black autism community to address these inequities.
Understanding caregiver experiences is crucial for developing equitable solutions.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the perspectives of caregivers of Black children with autism.
To identify barriers to equitable care and recommendations for improved services.
To center the voices of the Black autism community in addressing care disparities.

Main Methods:

A partnership between community leaders and academic researchers.
A Group Level Assessment involving 31 Black families of children with autism.
Collaborative data analysis and generation of action steps during a research event.

Main Results:

Identified 6 key areas of need in services for Black children with autism and their caregivers.
Caregivers recommended culturally responsive care and integration of their priorities.
Suggested improved navigation roadmaps, mental health resources, and care management support.

Conclusions:

This study addresses a critical gap by involving the Black autism community in identifying solutions.
Recommendations provide a foundation for service providers to reduce disparities.
Aims to improve health outcomes for Black children with autism and their families.
