Antibody Structure01:10

Antibody Structure

Overview
Antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins (Ig), are essential players of the adaptive immune system. These antigen-binding proteins are produced by B cells and make up 20 percent of the total blood plasma by weight. In mammals, antibodies fall into five different classes, which each elicits a different biological response upon antigen binding.

Summary

Diagnosing allergic disease often involves immunoglobulin E (IgE) blood tests. Analyzing IgE in nasal secretions, though challenging, can help differentiate local allergic rhinitis from nonallergic rhinitis when other tests are negative.

Area of Science:

  • Allergy and Immunology
  • Diagnostic Medicine

Background:

  • Allergic disease diagnosis commonly relies on serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) analysis.
  • Analyzing IgE in nasal secretions presents technical challenges due to low sample volume and collection methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the utility of IgE detection in nasal secretions for diagnosing allergic conditions.
  • To differentiate between local allergic rhinitis and nonallergic rhinitis, especially when skin and serum tests are inconclusive.

Main Methods:

  • Qualitative diagnostics via nasal lavage.
  • Quantitative analyses using swabs for defined mucus amounts.
  • Detection of IgE in nasal mucus combined with nasal provocation testing.

Main Results:

  • Nasal secretion IgE analysis is technically demanding but feasible.
  • Quantitative analysis is possible with swab-based mucus collection.
  • Combined nasal IgE detection and provocation testing aid in differentiating rhinitis types.

Conclusions:

  • IgE determination in nasal secretions offers a complementary diagnostic approach.
  • This method is particularly valuable for diagnosing local allergic rhinitis when systemic tests are negative.
  • Improved methods for nasal secretion collection and analysis are crucial for clinical application.
