Cognitive impairment (CI) often goes unrecognized in older adults with congestive heart failure (CHF), increasing hospitalizations. Early screening and the 4Ms Framework can improve care for these complex patients.
Area of Science:
- Geriatrics
- Cardiology
- Neurology
Background:
- Congestive heart failure (CHF) and cognitive impairment (CI) are prevalent in older adults.
- Co-occurring CHF and CI often lead to underdiagnosis of CI, resulting in increased hospitalizations, morbidity, and mortality.
- Addressing these conditions requires a comprehensive approach considering social determinants of health.

Normal Heart Sounds
S1 (First Heart Sound)-
S1 is made by the closure of the mitral and tricuspid valves (atrioventricular valves), marking the beginning of systole.
S2 (Second Heart Sound)-
S2 is made by the closure of the aortic and pulmonic valves (semilunar valves), marking the end of the systole.
