Summary

Environmental health (EH) services in the Caribbean were strengthened post-hurricanes through an online mentorship program. Both mentors and mentees reported high satisfaction and skill acquisition, recommending similar programs for EH professionals.

Background:

Hurricanes in 2017 severely impacted essential environmental health (EH) services in the U.S. Caribbean.
Rebuilding and strengthening EH systems was critical for public health resilience.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate an online mentorship program designed for EH staff and leadership in Caribbean health departments.
To assess the program's effectiveness in enhancing practical and didactic knowledge and skills.

Main Methods:

Development and implementation of an online mentorship program by the National Environmental Health Association and CDC.
Provision of practical and didactic learning experiences for participants.
Program evaluation through participant feedback.

Main Results:

High levels of satisfaction reported by both mentors and mentees regarding acquired knowledge and skills.
Mentees found the program content highly relevant to their daily work responsibilities.
The program successfully supported the rebuilding and strengthening of EH services.

Conclusions:

Online and hybrid mentorship programs are effective for developing EH workforces.
Recommendations include implementing such programs for leadership and inspector-level staff.
The model may be applicable to other professional fields requiring similar skill development.
