Stimulants01:29

Stimulants

181
Stimulants are substances that enhance neural activity and elevate dopamine levels in the brain, leading to their highly addictive nature. These drugs include cocaine, amphetamines, MDMA, caffeine, and nicotine, each with distinct mechanisms of action and varied health implications.
Cocaine can be administered via snorting, injection, or smoking. It primarily functions by blocking the reuptake of dopamine, resulting in a euphoric high characterized by an intense sensation of happiness and...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

28
Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease-V: Management

2.5K
Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) involves a multifaceted approach to reduce symptoms, prevent exacerbations, improve overall health status, and slow disease progression. Key strategies include lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, supportive therapies, and, in some cases, surgery. Here is an overview of the primary COPD management strategies:

CNS Depressants: Alcohol and Nicotine

193
Ethanol, a clear colorless alcohol, has been consumed by humans for millennia, but its effects on the body are far from benign. At lower doses, it induces decreased inhibitions and loquaciousness, leading to its social appeal. However, it can cause severe consequences at higher doses, such as coma and respiratory depression, due to its zero-order elimination kinetics. Chronic ethanol abuse wreaks havoc on multiple organ systems, particularly the CNS and the liver. Abrupt cessation of ethanol...

Statistical Methods for Analyzing Epidemiological Data

344
Epidemiological data primarily involves information on specific populations' occurrence, distribution, and determinants of health and diseases. This data is crucial for understanding disease patterns and impacts, aiding public health decision-making and disease prevention strategies. The analysis of epidemiological data employs various statistical methods to interpret health-related data effectively. Here are some commonly used methods:

Drugs Acting on Autonomic Ganglia: Stimulants01:23

Drugs Acting on Autonomic Ganglia: Stimulants

1.3K

Ganglionic stimulants activate NM nicotinic receptors in autonomic ganglia, falling into two categories: nicotine mimetics [e.g., lobeline, dimethylpiperazine, tetramethylammonium] and muscarinic receptor agonists [e.g., muscarine, methacholine]. The first category's action is rapid and blocked by nicotinic receptor antagonists, while the second category's action is delayed and blocked by atropine-like agents. Nicotine, an alkaloid, affects the heart rate by stimulating...

    Summary

Most U.S. adult smokers want to quit and attempt to do so, but few succeed. Healthcare provider support and evidence-based cessation treatments are crucial for increasing successful smoking cessation rates.

    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Epidemiology
    • Behavioral Science

    Background:

    • Tobacco dependence is a chronic condition driven by nicotine addiction.
    • Health care provider interventions and evidence-based treatments can increase smoking cessation success.
    • Understanding national smoking cessation indicators is vital for public health initiatives.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess national estimates of cigarette smoking cessation indicators among U.S. adults in 2022.
    • To examine disparities in cessation interest, attempts, and success based on menthol cigarette use.
    • To identify opportunities for improving smoking cessation services and support.

    Main Methods:

    • Data from the 2022 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) were analyzed.
    • Prevalences of smoking cessation interest, quit attempts, quit success, and receipt of health professional advice/assistance were calculated.
    • Comparisons were made between menthol and nonmenthol cigarette smokers.

    Main Results:

    • In 2022, 67.7% of adult smokers wanted to quit, 53.3% attempted to quit, and 8.8% successfully quit.
    • About half of smokers who saw a health professional received advice (50.5%) or assistance (49.2%) to quit.
    • Menthol smokers showed higher quit interest and attempts but lower receipt of advice and treatment use compared to nonmenthol smokers, with similar quit success rates.

    Conclusions:

    • Significant opportunities exist to enhance smoking cessation through public health and healthcare sectors.
    • Expanding access to and utilization of cessation services and supports is recommended.
    • Equitable cessation strategies are essential for advancing smoking cessation across all population groups.
