Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

336
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

12.7K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.3K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

11.9K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

152
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Area of Science:

  • Organizational Psychology
  • Workplace Well-being Research
  • Psychometric Validation

Background:

  • Donaldson & Donaldson (2021b) developed a scale to measure Positive Functioning at Work.
  • The scale expands the PERMA framework for workplace application.
  • Previous validation was limited, necessitating adaptation for diverse cultural contexts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the Positive Functioning at Work scale in a Spanish sample.
  • To assess the psychometric properties of the adapted scale.
  • To confirm its utility for workplace well-being assessment.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 698 Spanish workers (59% women, 41% men) participated.
  • Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Bifactor, and Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM) were employed.
  • Internal consistency, discriminant, criterion, predictive, and incremental validity were evaluated.

Main Results:

  • The nine-factor, bifactor, and ESEM models demonstrated good fit indices.
  • The adapted scale exhibited strong internal consistency (Cronbach's α = .90).
  • Evidence supported the scale's discriminant, criterion, predictive, and incremental validity, and measurement invariance.

Conclusions:

  • The validated scale offers a robust tool for measuring Positive Functioning at Work in Spanish-speaking populations.
  • Findings support its use in designing and evaluating workplace well-being programs.
  • The scale contributes to a comprehensive understanding of employee flourishing.
