Rab Cascades01:25

Rab Cascades

2.6K
Rab GTPases act in a regulated cascade during membrane fusion, helping the lipid bilayers mix. The Rab family of proteins are active when bound to GTP, and inactive when bound to GDP. Hence, they act as guanine nucleotide-dependent molecular switches. Rab-GTP recognizes and binds to long or short-range tethering proteins to capture the target vesicle. These tethers coordinate with SNAREs on the vesicle and the target membrane to assemble the trans SNARE complex that locks the mixing bilayers.

Patch Clamp01:18

Patch Clamp

5.4K
Many fundamental cell functions such as muscle contraction and nerve transmission rely on the electrical signals produced by the movement of positively and negatively charged ions across the cell membrane. One competent method to record current flowing across the whole cell or single ion channel is the patch-clamp technique.
In this method, a glass micropipette containing electrolyte solution is tightly sealed against a small portion of the cell membrane. As a result, a patch of the cell...

Feedback Regulation of Calcium Concentration01:27

Feedback Regulation of Calcium Concentration

3.4K
Calcium is an essential signaling molecule required for various cellular functions. Calcium pumps and ion channels on cell and organellar membranes, such as those on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), regulate calcium concentrations inside the cell. They remain closed, keeping the cytosolic calcium levels low at a resting state.
Various transmembrane receptors, such as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), elicit a response to extracellular signals by increasing cytosolic calcium. Activated GPCRs...

Calmodulin-dependent Signaling01:16

Calmodulin-dependent Signaling

5.1K
Calmodulin (CaM) is a calcium-binding protein in eukaryotes that controls various calcium-regulated cellular processes. It has four calcium-binding sites that bind calcium to form the calcium-calmodulin ( Ca2+-CaM) complex. GPCR stimulation increases the calcium levels in the cells that bind to CaM and induces a conformational change.
The Ca2+-CaM complex does not have enzymatic activity by itself. Instead, the complex binds downstream target proteins, including membrane proteins or enzymes,...

Cotranslational Protein Translocation01:20

Cotranslational Protein Translocation

7.3K
Translocation of proteins across membranes is an ancient process that occurs even in bacteria and archaebacteria. In fact, the components of the translocation machinery are still conserved between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
Sec61 channel partners for cotranslational translocation
During cotranslational translocation, the Sec61 channel partners with the signal recognition particle (SRP), the signal recognition particle receptor (SR), and the ribosomes to transport the nascent polypeptide chain...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

The capacity of memoryless state-dependent channels is derived with rate-limited helper assistance. This cribbing helper improves channel capacity, but not as much as a message-cognizant helper could.

Area of Science:

  • Information Theory
  • Communication Systems

Background:

  • State-dependent channels are crucial in modern communication systems.
  • Understanding capacity limits with auxiliary information is a key challenge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Derive the capacity of memoryless state-dependent channels.
  • Analyze the impact of rate-limited helper assistance on channel capacity.

Main Methods:

  • Information-theoretic analysis of channel capacity.
  • Modeling encoder-helper interaction with causal and strict causal constraints.

Main Results:

  • The capacity was derived for a channel with a cribbing helper.
  • Rate-limited assistance from the helper increases channel capacity.
  • The achievable capacity is bounded below the message-cognizant helper case.

Conclusions:

  • Rate-limited side information can enhance channel capacity.
  • The derived capacity provides a tighter bound for practical scenarios.
  • This work clarifies the limits of auxiliary information in communication channels.
