Background:

Contactless interaction systems are increasingly important.
3D gestural embodied human-computer interaction (eHCI) offers a contactless interface.
Gestural system design follows either a technology-based or human-based approach.

Purpose of the Study:

To review existing literature on development approaches for 3D gestural eHCI.
To understand the current research landscape in 3D gestural eHCI development.
To identify future research directions in the field.

Main Methods:

Literature review across PsycInfo, Science Direct, and IEEE Xplore databases.
Identification and categorization of 35 relevant articles.
Analysis of 18 human-based and 17 technology-based development methods.

Main Results:

Identified inconsistencies between developer and user preferences for hand gesture poses.
Highlighted key factors influencing user selection of gestures.
Found a near-equal split between human-based and technology-based development approaches in the reviewed literature.

Conclusions:

Consolidating findings on user-gesture interactions can enhance eHCI system design.
Addressing identified inconsistencies can improve user acceptance and readiness for 3D gestural eHCI.
Further research is needed to bridge the gap between developer implementation and user expectations in gestural interfaces.
