This study developed a visuo-haptic simulator for physics students to learn buoyancy. The simulator group showed improved learning gains and positive feedback, validating its effectiveness as an immersive educational tool.
Area of Science:
- Physics Education
- Engineering Education
- Immersive Learning Technologies
Background:
- Traditional physics education struggles to effectively convey complex concepts like buoyancy.
- Developing engaging and interactive learning tools is crucial for enhancing student comprehension.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate a visuo-haptic simulator for teaching the physics of buoyancy.
- To assess the impact of this immersive tool on freshman engineering students' understanding.
Main Methods:
- The VIS-HAPT methodology was employed to create a high-quality visuo-haptic simulator.
- 182 undergraduate students were divided into an experimental (simulator) and control group.
- Learning gains were measured via pre- and post-tests, supplemented by perception questionnaires.
Main Results:
- The experimental group demonstrated significantly higher learning gains compared to the control group (p=0.079).
- Students reported high enthusiasm and perceived a positive impact on their understanding of physical concepts.
- The VIS-HAPT methodology reduced simulator development time.
Conclusions:
- The buoyancy visuo-haptic simulator effectively enhances the learning experience for engineering physics students.
- The VIS-HAPT method is validated as an efficient approach for developing immersive physics educational tools.
