Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

Depression is a significant concern among university students.
Validated instruments are crucial for accurate assessment and intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the construct validity and internal consistency of the University Student Depression Inventory, Brazilian version (USDI-BR).

Main Methods:

Methodological study with a snowball sample of 334 students.
Confirmatory factor analysis and reliability analyses (McDonald's omega, Cronbach's alpha).
Principal component analysis with varimax and oblimin rotations.

Main Results:

The USDI-BR showed excellent internal consistency (ω = 0.95).
The scale retained 30 items and a 4-factor structure, including a new factor for 'Death wish and social withdrawal'.

Conclusions:

The USDI-BR provides evidence of validity and internal consistency.
Further research is recommended to expand the evidence of its psychometric properties.
