Routine screening with the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX) significantly increased the identification of antidepressant-related sexual dysfunction in psychiatric clinics. Most patients would not report these side effects without direct questioning.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Pharmacology
- Clinical Pharmacy
Background:
- Treatment-emergent sexual dysfunction (TESD) is a frequent side effect of antidepressant medications.
- Limited data exist on the routine use of the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX) for TESD identification in clinical practice.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of routine ASEX implementation on identifying sexual dysfunction in adult psychiatric outpatients receiving antidepressant therapy.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective study compared the rates of sexual dysfunction identification before and after the implementation of the ASEX survey.
- Data were collected from adult patients seen by a psychiatric clinical pharmacist between June 2020 and March 2022.
Main Results:
- Sexual dysfunction identification increased significantly from 10% pre-ASEX to 59% post-ASEX implementation.
- Approximately 70% of patients identified with sexual dysfunction post-ASEX reported they would not have disclosed symptoms without direct inquiry.
Conclusions:
- Routine use of the validated ASEX survey in ambulatory psychiatry settings substantially improves the detection of antidepressant-associated sexual dysfunction.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration and proactive screening are crucial for identifying medication tolerability issues.
