    Abdominal wound closure using Proximate staples offers faster healing for vertical incisions compared to sutures. However, sub-cuticular sutures provide superior cosmetic results for transverse abdominal wounds.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the cosmetic outcomes and efficiency of Proximate staple closure versus traditional suture closure for abdominal wounds.

    Main Methods:

    • A prospective, blind, randomized trial involving 57 abdominal wounds.
    • Wounds were closed with either 3/0 Prolene sutures or Proximate staples.
    • Cosmetic results were assessed by eight independent observers using photographic slides and a 1-10 grading scale.

    • Sub-cuticular sutures yielded better cosmetic scores for transverse abdominal wounds compared to staples.
    • Cosmetic outcomes for vertical abdominal wounds were comparable between staple and suture closure.

    • Proximate staple closure is a viable and more time-efficient option for vertical abdominal wounds.
    • For transverse abdominal wounds, suture closure may offer superior cosmetic results.
