Background:

  • Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have shown potential to improve patient mortality and morbidity in clinical trials.
  • Integrating PROMs into routine oncology care is a key area for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively investigate the implementation of PROMs in routine medical oncology outpatient settings.
  • To assess the impact of PROMs on symptom detection, clinical response, and health service utilization.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted in an Australian medical oncology outpatient department.
  • Two clinics were randomized to implement symptom PROMs, while control clinics maintained usual care.
  • Statistical models, including binary logistic and multiple regression, were used to analyze symptom detection and clinical response.

Main Results:

  • A total of 461 patient encounters were analyzed (222 intervention, 242 control).
  • While symptom detection did not significantly increase (OR 1.05, P=.08), the odds of receiving nonroutine allied health reviews for supportive care significantly increased in the intervention group (OR 3.54, P=.02).

Conclusions:

  • Routine implementation of PROMs in oncology did not significantly enhance symptom detection.
  • PROMs implementation was associated with a higher likelihood of accessing supportive care services.
  • Larger studies are recommended to further evaluate the impact of PROMs on health service outcomes.
