Background:
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is linked to increased cardiovascular disease and cognitive impairment risks.
- Curcumin, a polyphenol, benefits vascular and cognitive health in older adults, but its impact on CKD patients is unstudied.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate if curcumin supplementation improves vascular and cognitive function in patients with stage 3b or 4 CKD.
Main Methods:
- A 12-month randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 88 CKD adults (mean eGFR 34.7 ± 10.8).
- Participants received 2000 mg/day of curcumin (Longvida®) or a placebo.
- Primary outcome: brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD). Secondary outcomes: nitroglycerin-mediated dilation, cfPWV, and NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery scores.
Main Results:
- Curcumin supplementation did not significantly improve FMD compared to placebo (p=0.69).
- No significant changes were observed in other vascular measures (nitroglycerin-mediated dilation, cfPWV) or cognitive function outcomes.

- Twelve months of daily curcumin supplementation does not enhance vascular or cognitive function in individuals with stage 3b or 4 CKD.
- These findings do not support the use of chronic curcumin supplementation for improving vascular and cognitive health in this patient population.
