Diabetes Mellitus: Type 2 and Gestational

2.3K
Type 2 diabetes, characterized by insulin resistance, arises when the insulin receptors on cells lose responsiveness to insulin, diminishing the cell's capacity to take up glucose, resulting in elevated blood glucose levels. To receive a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, a series of blood glucose tests are necessary to assess whether the blood glucose falls within normal parameters. If the result is out of the normal range, a patient may be diagnosed as prediabetic or diabetic, depending on the...

Pathophysiology of Diabetes01:20

Pathophysiology of Diabetes

908
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia. The four categories of diabetes are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, other specific types of diabetes, and gestational diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is characterized by autoimmune-mediated destruction of pancreatic β cells, with environmental factors potentially triggering this process in genetically susceptible individuals. Despite many not having a family history, certain genes increase susceptibility,...

Summary

Accucheck® and On Call® glucose meters demonstrated superior accuracy and reliability compared to Bionime® for diabetic patients. Using closed vials for test strips also yielded more precise blood glucose readings.

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Medical Devices
  • Diabetes Management

Background:

  • Diabetes monitoring relies on capillary blood glucose measurement using glucometers.
  • Accurate glucose readings are crucial for effective diabetes management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the performance of three commonly used glucose meters: Accucheck®, On Call®, and Bionime®.
  • To evaluate repeatability, accuracy, and stability of these devices in diabetic patients.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving 100 diabetic patients.
  • Capillary blood glucose was measured using Accucheck®, On Call®, and Bionime® glucometers.
  • Laboratory analysis of venous blood (Siemens X brand plus® PLC) served as the reference method.

Main Results:

  • Accucheck® and On Call® showed better correlation with the reference method, especially regarding test strip storage (open and closed vials).
  • These two devices were found to be more reliable and accurate than the Bionime® reader.
  • Using closed vials for test strips consistently resulted in more accurate glycemia readings.

Conclusions:

  • Accucheck® and On Call® glucose meters offer comparable and superior performance to Bionime® for diabetic patient monitoring.
  • Proper storage of test strips in closed vials is essential for accurate glucose meter results.
