    Summary

    Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging effectively detects brainstem tumors and abnormal signals, surpassing computed tomography (CT) in evaluating these complex cases. MR imaging is superior for brainstem tumor evaluation.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and computed tomography (CT) in evaluating brainstem tumors.
    • To assess the sensitivity of MR imaging in detecting tumor-related abnormalities.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study of 18 patients with brainstem tumors (aged 4-72 years).
    • Utilized a 0.5 T MR imager and third/fourth-generation CT scanner.
    • Evaluated sagittal views, signal intensity alterations (spin-echo, inversion recovery), and tumor margins.

    Main Results:

    • MR imaging detected brainstem enlargement in all cases and abnormal signal intensities in most.
    • CT identified brainstem tumors in only 13 of 16 cases.
    • MR imaging could not differentiate primary from metastatic tumors; CT showed enhancement in one metastatic case after contrast.

    • MR imaging is highly sensitive for detecting brainstem tumor enlargement and abnormal signals.
    • MR imaging demonstrates superiority over CT in the comprehensive evaluation of brainstem tumors.
    • Further research is needed to distinguish tumor types using advanced MR techniques.
