    Summary

Condyloma acuminatum and papilloma of the cervix may precede cervical cancer. Complete surgical removal and long-term monitoring are crucial for early detection and treatment of these cervical lesions.

    Area of Science:

    • Gynecologic Pathology
    • Oncology
    • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Research

    Background:

    • Cervical condyloma acuminatum and papillomas are benign HPV-related lesions.
    • These lesions can present diagnostic challenges, sometimes masking or coexisting with cervical adenocarcinoma.
    • Understanding their potential role in cervical carcinogenesis is critical for patient management.

    Observation:

    • Two cases are presented: one with cervical condyloma acuminatum and another with cervical papilloma and concurrent adenocarcinoma.
    • Initial biopsies identified only the benign papillomatous lesion.
    • The adenocarcinoma was definitively diagnosed in the surgical hysterectomy specimen.

    Findings:

    • The diagnostic biopsy may not reveal coexisting malignancy.
    • Condylomatous lesions of the cervix might be more common than previously thought.
    • These lesions may represent an early stage in the development of cervical cancer.

    Implications:

    • In toto excision of cervical papillomatous lesions is recommended for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
    • Long-term clinical, colposcopic, and cytologic surveillance is essential post-treatment.
    • Early identification and management of cervical papillomas may reduce the risk of progression to cervical cancer.
