    Background:

    • Circulatory hormone levels can be affected by environmental stressors.
    • High altitude environments present unique physiological challenges.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of high altitude exposure on pituitary hormones and testosterone in eugonadal men.
    • To determine the time course of these hormonal changes during and after altitude exposure.

    Main Methods:

    • Seven eugonadal men were studied at sea level (SL), high altitude (HA, 3500 m), and after returning to SL.
    • Plasma levels of prolactin (PRL), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone were measured at various time points.

    Main Results:

    • Prolactin (PRL) levels significantly increased by day 18 at HA and returned to baseline post-exposure.
    • Luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone levels significantly decreased by day 7 at HA, with LH remaining suppressed after return to SL.
    • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels showed no significant changes.

    Conclusions:

    • High altitude exposure is associated with altitude-induced hyperprolactinemia and impaired pituitary gonadal function.
    • Decreased LH and testosterone at HA may be due to hypoxic stress or hyperprolactinemia.
