Prenatal exposure to ambient air pollution and persistent postpartum depression

Prenatal exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter 10 (PM10) significantly increases the risk of persistent postpartum depression up to three years. Mid-pregnancy air pollution exposure is a critical factor in long-term maternal mental health.

- Prenatal exposure to an IQR increase in PM10 (7.4 μg/m3) during gestational weeks 12-28 was associated with a 3.88-fold increased risk of persistent postpartum depression.
- No clear sensitive windows were identified for PM2.5 or O3.
Conclusions:
- Mid-pregnancy exposure to PM10 and NO2 is associated with nearly a 4-fold increased risk of persistent postpartum depression.
- These findings highlight the critical implications of air pollution for perinatal mental health prevention strategies.
