Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of boxing training versus scapular stabilization exercises in improving outcomes for hemiparetic stroke patients.
  • To evaluate the effects on scapular mobility, balance, muscle strength, motor function, and patient satisfaction.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty hemiparetic patients were randomized into three groups: boxing (BG), scapular stabilization (SSG), and control (CG).
  • Interventions lasted eight weeks, with three sessions per week.
  • Outcome measures included scapular mobility, balance angle (SBA), muscle strength, Manual Function Test (MFT), and treatment satisfaction.

Main Results:

  • The boxing group demonstrated superior improvements in SBA, and scapular mobility across all planes (frontal, sagittal, transverse) compared to the control group.
  • Boxing training enhanced serratus anterior strength, while scapular stabilization primarily improved infraspinatus strength.
  • The boxing group showed significantly greater improvements in supraspinatus, upper trapezius, anterior deltoid, latissimus dorsi strength, MFT scores, and patient satisfaction compared to the scapular stabilization group.

Conclusions:

  • Both boxing and scapular stabilization training positively impact stroke recovery.
  • Boxing training emerged as a more effective intervention, yielding better results in balance, scapular mobility, upper limb motor function, and patient satisfaction.
