Overview of Cell Death01:30

Overview of Cell Death

Cell death is an essential process where the body gets rid of old or damaged cells. Cell proliferation and death need to be balanced, as an imbalance between the two may lead to cancer or autoimmune diseases.
Cell death was observed in the early 19th century, but there was no experimental evidence to prove it. In 1842, Carl Vogt first discovered cell death in a metamorphic toad; however, it was not termed ‘cell death.’ Scientists discovered different cell death pathways only in the 20th century...

Background:

  • Regulated cell death (RCD) is vital for multicellular organism development and homeostasis.
  • Understanding RCD mechanisms is critical for treating diseases like cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Current data repositories lack comprehensive RCD data and analytical tools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish the Regulated Cell Death Database (RCDdb), the first manually annotated database for all RCD types.
  • To provide comprehensive annotations and analytical functionalities for RCD research.

Main Methods:

  • Compiled 3090 marker gene annotations for 15 RCD types from 2180 articles.
  • Integrated data on diseases, drugs, pathways, proteins, and gene expression.
  • Developed 49 visualization methods and three online analysis tools.

Main Results:

  • The RCDdb contains extensive manually curated annotations for RCD marker genes.
  • It offers diverse visualization options and powerful online analysis tools.
  • The database provides a user-friendly interface for data exploration and analysis.

Conclusions:

  • RCDdb significantly enhances researchers' ability to study cell death mechanisms.
  • This resource accelerates progress in developing therapeutic strategies for RCD-related diseases.
  • RCDdb serves as a valuable platform for RCD research and drug discovery.
