    Summary

Nicardipine improved exercise capacity in patients with stable angina pectoris. This calcium channel blocker therapy prolonged exercise duration and increased oxygen consumption, offering potential benefits for angina management.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Stable angina pectoris is a common cardiovascular condition.
    • Effective management strategies are crucial for improving patient outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of nicardipine in patients with stable angina pectoris.
    • To assess the impact of nicardipine on exercise tolerance and anginal symptoms.

    Main Methods:

    • A multicentre, randomised, double-blind, cross-over trial.
    • 66 patients with stable angina pectoris received nicardipine (30 and 40 mg thrice daily) or placebo.
    • Evaluated exercise duration, oxygen consumption, onset of angina, ST segment depression, anginal frequency, and nitroglycerin use.

    Main Results:

    • Nicardipine therapy significantly increased exercise duration and cumulative oxygen consumption.
    • Times to onset of angina and 1 mm ST segment depression were prolonged with nicardipine.
    • A slight increase in resting heart rate and a decrease in resting blood pressure were observed.
    • Anginal frequency and nitroglycerin consumption showed a non-significant decline.

    Conclusions:

    • Nicardipine demonstrates efficacy in improving exercise tolerance in patients with stable angina pectoris.
    • The observed benefits suggest nicardipine as a potential therapeutic option for managing stable angina.
    • Side effects were generally mild and transient, with a low incidence of serious adverse events.
