Fatalities from screwdriver injuries are rare in the US. A unique case involved a Torx screwdriver, a weapon previously unreported, causing distinct hybrid injuries.
Area of Science:
- Forensic Pathology
- Trauma Analysis
Background:
- Sharp and pointed instrument fatalities are uncommon in the US.
- Screwdriver tip shape influences wound patterns, aiding in weapon identification.
Observation:
- A case of an adult male fatality with multiple injuries was investigated.
- Autopsy revealed penetrating wound patterns consistent with a six-point star (Torx) screwdriver.
Findings:
- The Torx screwdriver, with its blunt head, produced hybrid injuries combining penetrating and blunt force characteristics.
- This represents the first reported fatality involving a Torx screwdriver as a weapon.
Implications:
- Forensic pathologists must recognize atypical penetrating wounds to identify rare weapons.
- Detailed injury documentation and comparison are crucial for identifying the weapon when it is not recovered.

Frictional Forces on Screws
A jack with a square-threaded screw is a mechanical device used to lift heavy loads by applying a force at its handle. When the force is applied, the screw turns, raising the load. The screw can...
Self-Locking Screw
A square-threaded screw jack carrying a load is considered self-locking if the screw retains its position even after the moment applied to it is removed.
