Maxam-Gilbert Sequencing

11.1K
In the same year as the discovery of the Sanger sequencing method, another group of scientists, Allan Maxam and Walter Gilbert, demonstrated their chemical-cleavage method for DNA sequencing. The Maxam-Gilbert method relies on using different chemicals that can cleave the DNA sequence at specific sites, the separation of resulting DNA fragments of variable size using electrophoresis, and deciphering the DNA sequence from the resulting gel bands.

    Area of Science:

    • Information Visualization
    • Human-Computer Interaction
    • Data Science

    Background:

    • Visual analytics tools for event sequence data are domain-specific, hindering cross-domain comparison and transferability.
    • Existing task abstractions for visualization are insufficient for event sequence analytics, often overlooking automated techniques.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • Propose a domain-agnostic, multi-level task framework for event sequence analytics.
    • Address the limitations of current task abstractions in visual analytics for event sequence data.

    Main Methods:

    • Analyzed 58 papers presenting event sequence visualization systems.
    • Developed a four-level framework: objective, intent, strategy, and technique.
    • Defined intents (augment, simplify, configure data/visualization, manage provenance) and associated strategies and techniques.

    Main Results:

    • The proposed framework provides a structured approach to understanding and categorizing tasks in event sequence visual analytics.
    • Demonstrated the framework's descriptive power through case studies.
    • Each technique is expressible as an action-input-output-criteria quartet.

    Conclusions:

    • The new framework facilitates a deeper understanding and systematic comparison of event sequence visual analytics approaches.
    • Offers a foundation for developing more versatile and transferable visual analytics tools for event sequence data.
