Current Trends in Nursing II

1.2K
Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Issues And Trends In Healthcare Delivery System

5.6K
The issues and trends in healthcare delivery are constantly changing. The COVID-19 pandemic is one recent issue that wreaked havoc on healthcare systems, causing a shortage of healthcare workers, high demand for medicines and supplies, and increased medical expenditure due to a lack of insurance. Other issues include rising healthcare costs and care fragmentation.
Cost Containment
Payment for healthcare services has historically promoted adoption of costly and often unnecessary or inefficient...

Methods of reducing fever

644
The signs and symptoms of fever include hot and dry skin, flushed face, thirst, muscle aches, anorexia, headache, tachycardia, tachypnea, and fatigue. Elevated body temperature is reduced using two methods: pharmacological and nonpharmacological. Proper identification and treatment of the root cause of a fever is of utmost importance.

Esophageal Strictures-I: Introduction01:30

Esophageal Strictures-I: Introduction

66
Esophageal strictures involve abnormal narrowing or tightening of the esophagus. They vary in length and severity, ranging from mild constriction to complete obstruction, and are classified as benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
Etiology
The primary cause of esophageal strictures is long-standing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), accounting for about 70 to 80% of adult cases. Chronic acid reflux can lead to injury and scarring of the esophageal lining, culminating in...

Summary

Reusable straw injuries are rising, especially in young children, often due to improper use. Metal straws present the highest risk, and their use should be avoided in pediatric populations to prevent emergency department visits.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Consumer Product Safety

Background:

  • Growing societal emphasis on eco-sustainability has led to increased use of reusable utensils, including multiuse straws.
  • This trend necessitates an understanding of the associated injury risks, particularly for reusable straw materials.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct the first epidemiological investigation of plastic, glass, and metal straw-related injuries (SRIs) presenting to emergency departments (EDs).
  • To identify patterns in SRIs based on demographics, injury mechanisms, and straw material.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database for SRIs from January 2012 to December 2021.
  • Stratification of cases by sex, age, diagnosis, mechanism of injury, and straw material to identify epidemiological trends.

Main Results:

  • A total of 1,174 SRIs were recorded, with the majority affecting males (55.9%) and very young children aged 0-3 years (43.8%).
  • Reusable straw injuries were significantly more common in children under 3 (P < 0.001), with mouth and eye injuries being prevalent.
  • Nearly half of injuries (46.3%) resulted from improper straw use, and metal straw injuries showed a notable increase (12.8%) over the study period.

Conclusions:

  • Accidental poking during drinking is common, but off-label straw use accounts for nearly half of all injuries.
  • Proper education on straw usage and supervision of children are crucial for reducing SRI incidence.
  • Metal straws are associated with the highest risk of ED-presenting injuries and should be avoided in the pediatric population.
