Life Histories01:29

Life Histories

Constrained by limited energy and resources, organisms must compromise between offspring quantity and parental investment. This trade-off is represented by two primary reproductive strategies; K-strategists produce few offspring but provide substantial parental support, whereas r-strategists produce much progeny that receives little care. These strategies are related to an organism’s survival likelihood across its lifespan, which is represented by a survivorship curve. Three general types of...
Regression Toward the Mean01:52

Regression Toward the Mean

Regression toward the mean (“RTM”) is a phenomenon in which extremely high or low values—for example, and individual’s blood pressure at a particular moment—appear closer to a group’s average upon remeasuring. Although this statistical peculiarity is the result of random error and chance, it has been problematic across various medical, scientific, financial and psychological applications. In particular, RTM, if not taken into account, can interfere when researchers try to extrapolate results...

Area of Science:

  • Developmental Pediatrics
  • Neurorehabilitation
  • Early Intervention

Background:

  • Environmental enrichment (EE) principles inform early intervention (EI) strategies.
  • The HEP Approach is a novel EI model grounded in EE.
  • This study assesses the feasibility, safety, and caregiver acceptance of the HEP Approach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the HEP Approach intervention for premature infants.
  • To examine outcomes in motor development, functional goals, sensory functions, and movement motivation.
  • To assess caregiver satisfaction and acceptance of the intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Pre-post-study design with 18 premature infants (corrected age 4-10 months).
  • Intervention: 12 one-hour sessions over three months.
  • Measures: Likert scale survey, motor/sensory assessments, caregiver affordances, movement motivation, and goal attainment scale (GAS).

Main Results:

  • High caregiver satisfaction, feasibility, safety, and acceptability reported.
  • Significant gains observed in GAS scores (mean t=67.75).
  • Statistically significant improvements (p ≤ 0.05) across all outcome measures.

Conclusions:

  • The HEP Approach is a safe, feasible, and acceptable intervention for premature infants.
  • The intervention effectively enhances motor development, sensory functions, and caregiver engagement.
  • The HEP Approach shows promise for guiding future research in EI for at-risk infants.
