Purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP) activity in leukemic cells can distinguish between chronic lymphocytic leukemia and prolymphocytic leukemia. Elevated PNP levels may indicate early prolymphocytoid transformation in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
