Dietitians as lactation educators/consultants

This experience illustrates opportunities for dietitians on several levels. In a broad sense, it suggests the opportunity for a private practice built on group education in an area of normal nutrition. In addition, it demonstrates lactation education/counseling as an acceptable activity for dietitians with appropriate experience and training. There is clearly a public health need for more information and support to increase the incidence of successful, enjoyable breast feeding. Dietitians can and should be at the forefront of such efforts.
