This study reveals two distinct patterns of brain aging in over 37,000 individuals. Accelerated brain aging is linked to faster biological aging, cognitive decline, and higher risks for neuropsychiatric disorders.
Area of Science:
- Neuroimaging
- Genomics
- Aging Research
Background:
- Brain aging exhibits significant individual differences, often mirroring developmental patterns.
- Previous research primarily relied on cross-sectional data due to limited longitudinal studies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify distinct patterns of structural brain aging using a data-driven approach.
- To investigate the relationship between accelerated brain aging and biological aging, cognitive function, and genetic predispositions.
- To validate the 'last in, first out' hypothesis in brain development and aging.
Main Methods:
- Utilized a large-scale dataset (37,013 participants) from UK Biobank incorporating cross-sectional and longitudinal data.
- Integrated longitudinal neuroimaging data from an adolescent cohort.
- Performed genomic analyses to identify risk loci and genes.
Main Results:
- Identified two distinct patterns of brain aging.
- Accelerated brain aging correlated with accelerated biological aging, cognitive decline, and increased susceptibility to neuropsychiatric disorders.
- Validated the 'last in, first out' hypothesis and identified specific brain regions showing mirroring patterns.
Conclusions:
- The study provides a data-driven framework for understanding brain aging heterogeneity.
- Findings suggest a molecular basis for accelerated brain aging and delayed development, offering insights into related disorders.
