An integrated approach effectively treated hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in women and maintained improvements. This method showed greater effectiveness than Masters-Johnson Sex Therapy for couples experiencing HSDD.
Area of Science:
- Sexual health
- Psychology
- Clinical trials
Background:
- Low sexual desire and sexual dysfunctions are common issues.
- Integrated approaches offer a promising avenue for treatment.
- Masters-Johnson Sex Therapy (MJST) is a recognized treatment modality.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the effectiveness of an integrated approach versus MJST for treating hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).
- To evaluate treatment outcomes in Iranian couples experiencing HSDD.
Main Methods:
- A randomized clinical trial was conducted with 24 couples diagnosed with HSDD.
- Couples were assigned to either an integrated approach or MJST (10 sessions).
- Standard questionnaires assessed sexual desire and function pre-intervention, post-intervention, and at an 8-week follow-up.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in sexual desire or function were observed between groups for men.
- Women in the integrated approach group showed significantly greater improvement in sexual desire and function compared to the MJST group.
- Improvements in women's sexual function and overall sexual desire were sustained at the 8-week follow-up in the integrated approach group.
Conclusions:
- An integrated approach is an effective treatment for HSDD in couples.
- The integrated approach demonstrated superior outcomes for women compared to MJST.
- Sustained improvements highlight the long-term benefits of the integrated approach for sexual health.
