This study identified high-quality media health literacy (MHL) measurement tools. These instruments assess critical analysis skills for health information, aiding informed decision-making and risk assessment.
Area of Science:
- Health Communication
- Health Literacy
- Psychometrics
Background:
- Information overload impacts health decisions.
- Media health literacy (MHL) promotes critical analysis of health information.
- Developing effective MHL measurement tools is crucial.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review instruments measuring media health literacy.
- To evaluate the psychometric properties of identified MHL measurement tools.
Main Methods:
- Systematic literature review conducted in 2023.
- Searched databases: Pubmed, Web of Science, Dialnet, Scopus.
- Included English, Spanish, and Portuguese articles.
Main Results:
- Twelve articles were selected.
- Five original scales and seven cross-cultural adaptations were identified.
- Four scales demonstrated high psychometric quality: adapted Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Media Literacy scales (Turkish, Chinese) and the Media Health Literacy (MeHLit) scale (Chinese adaptation).
Conclusions:
- Validated MHL instruments enable skill assessment for health information consumption.
- These tools facilitate understanding of individual risk exposure.
- Further research is needed to broaden evidence and application to diverse populations.
