    Summary

    Long-term, high-mileage running did not increase the risk of degenerative joint disease in male runners. This study found comparable joint health between runners and non-runners, suggesting running is safe for joints.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the prevalence of degenerative joint disease in long-duration, high-mileage male runners versus non-runners.
    • To investigate potential associations between running and osteoarthritis in the lower extremities.

    Main Methods:

    • Cross-sectional study comparing 17 male runners (average age 56) with 18 male non-runners (average age 60).
    • Runners averaged 44.8 km/week for 12 years; 53% were marathoners.
    • Evaluated musculoskeletal complaints (pain, swelling) and performed radiologic examinations (osteophytes, cartilage thickness, degeneration grade).
