Bode Plots Construction

669
The Bode plot is an essential tool in control system analysis, mapping the frequency response of a system through a magnitude plot and a phase plot, both against a logarithmic frequency axis. To construct a Bode plot, consider the transfer function H(ω):

Summary

Objective measures like electrically-evoked stapedial reflex thresholds (eSRT) can efficiently assess auditory nerve charge integration efficiency (CIE) in pediatric cochlear implant users. This method offers a practical alternative to behavioral assessments.

Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Neuroscience
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Cochlear implants (CIs) aim to restore hearing by electrically stimulating the auditory nerve.
  • Assessing the efficiency of charge integration (CIE) is crucial for optimizing CI performance.
  • Objective measures are needed for efficient CIE assessment, especially in pediatric populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To objectively assess the charge integration efficiency (CIE) of the auditory nerve in pediatric cochlear implant users.
  • To evaluate the utility of electrically-evoked stapedial reflex threshold (eSRT) measurements for CIE estimation.
  • To compare CIE estimates derived from objective (eSRT) and subjective (behavioral loudness) methods.

Main Methods:

  • Electrically-evoked stapedial reflex thresholds (eSRT) were measured in 15 pediatric CI users.
  • Pulse width and amplitude were systematically varied to determine electrical dynamic range (EDR) for eSRT (EDRPW and EDRPA).
  • Charge integration efficiency (CIE) was calculated based on eSRT and compared with behavioral thresholds.

Main Results:

  • Electrical dynamic range measured by pulse width (EDRPW) was significantly larger than by pulse amplitude (EDRPA).
  • While EDRPW and EDRPA correlated, CIE estimates did not significantly correlate with behavioral thresholds.
  • Electrode location did not significantly affect CIE measurements.

Conclusions:

  • Electrically-evoked stapedial reflex threshold (eSRT) provides an objective and comparable measure of charge integration efficiency (CIE) to behavioral methods.
  • eSRT is a quick and implementable method for CIE assessment in pediatric cochlear implant users.
  • CIE assessment using eSRT can help differentiate electrode performance in cochlear implants.
