Surveys

Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Background:

Virtual interviews are increasingly vital in residency selection, with applicants attending a median of 23.5 interviews per the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
Effective utilization of virtual pre-interview materials is crucial for graduate medical education programs to shape applicant perceptions before interviews.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of virtual interview formats, necessitating an evaluation of their impact and associated resources.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze the perceived usefulness of various virtual and print pre-interview resources among residents and fellows.
To provide recommendations for enhancing virtual resources to improve the interview experience, particularly for under-represented minorities in medicine (UiM) applicants.

Main Methods:

Secondary data analysis of an anonymous cross-sectional survey.
Data collected from 123 residents and fellows during orientation sessions in June and July 2022.
Usefulness of pre-interview resources rated on a 5-point Likert scale.

Main Results:

Social media sites received the highest average usefulness score (4.0).
The program website (3.90) and information packet (3.88) also scored highly in perceived usefulness.
These findings highlight the significant role of digital and informational resources in the virtual interview process.

Conclusions:

Graduate medical education programs should strategically leverage social media, program websites, and information packets to enhance virtual interview preparation.
Restructuring virtual resources can significantly improve the quality of the interview experience for all applicants.
Specific attention should be paid to tailoring resources to support under-represented minorities in medicine (UiM) applicants for a more equitable selection process.
