Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Regenerative Medicine
  • Biomaterials Science

Background:

  • Sinus floor elevation is a key procedure for augmenting vertically deficient maxillary alveolar ridges.
  • Xenografts and hydroxyapatite are established biomaterials for sinus augmentation.
  • Comparing novel biomaterials like nanohydroxyapatite with traditional ones is crucial for advancing augmentation techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the bone quality and quantity generated by nanohydroxyapatite (NHA) versus deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) in sinus augmentation procedures.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of NHA as a bone graft substitute in comparison to a widely used xenograft.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 24 patients undergoing sinus floor elevation.
  • Augmentation was performed using either NHA or DBB (control group).
  • Bone height was measured preoperatively, immediately postoperatively, and at 6 months; histological and histomorphometric analyses assessed bone quality.

Main Results:

  • Both NHA and DBB groups showed good bone consolidation with no significant difference in mean bone height at 6 months (11.72 mm vs 12.01 mm).
  • Histomorphometric analysis revealed no significant differences in newly formed bone percentage (29.84% vs 34.73%) or residual graft material (32.43% vs 30.43%) between NHA and DBB groups.
  • Histological evaluation showed no significant differences in bone regeneration parameters between the two groups.

Conclusions:

  • Nanohydroxyapatite (NHA) and deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) yield comparable results in terms of regenerated bone quality and quantity following sinus floor augmentation.
  • Further research with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods is recommended to solidify these findings.
