Summary

This study shows that a modified ridge split procedure effectively reconstructs horizontal mandibular defects using either autogenous bone or Anorganic Bone Bovine Mineral (ABBM) grafts. Both materials provide stable bone for dental implant insertion.

Background:

  • Posterior mandibular alveolar bone deficiency often hinders dental implant placement.
  • A modified ridge split technique was developed to address horizontal bone insufficiency.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a modified ridge split procedure for horizontal mandibular alveolar reconstruction.
  • To compare autogenous bone particulates with Anorganic Bone Bovine Mineral (ABBM) as graft materials.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty patients with posterior horizontal mandibular alveolar deficiency underwent a modified ridge split procedure.
  • Grafting was performed using autogenous bone (study group) or ABBM (control group).
  • Horizontal bone gain and histomorphometric bone area were assessed after 6 months, followed by implant insertion.

Main Results:

  • All bone grafts achieved consolidation.
  • No statistically significant difference was observed in mean 6-month horizontal bone width or bone gain between the autogenous and ABBM groups.
  • A statistically significant difference in new bone formation percentage favored the autogenous group (34.40%) over the ABBM group (38.83%).

Conclusions:

  • The modified ridge split procedure is reliable for reconstructing horizontally deficient posterior alveolar ridges.
  • Both autogenous bone and ABBM grafts offer volumetric stability and adequate bone quality for dental implants.
  • The choice of graft material may influence new bone formation rates.
