Background:

  • Trigger finger release (TFR) is a common hand surgery with a high success rate.
  • Recurrence of trigger finger necessitates revision surgery (rTFR), but data on associated risk factors are limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze risk factors associated with the need for revision trigger finger release (rTFR) surgery.
  • To identify patient demographics and comorbidities that predict the requirement for repeat TFR procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a national database (PearlDiver Research Program) of patients undergoing TFR between 2015 and 2022.
  • Identified revision TFR cases and analyzed demographic and comorbidity data using univariate and multivariable logistic regression.
  • Calculated revision rates at 1, 3, and 5 years post-initial TFR.

Main Results:

  • Out of 46,613 TFR patients, 3.85% (1,793) required revision surgery.
  • Diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and male sex were significantly associated with increased odds of rTFR at 1, 3, and 5 years.
  • Age >65, hypertension, and carpal tunnel syndrome were also identified as risk factors for revision at specific time points.

Conclusions:

  • Male sex, diabetes, and heart disease are significant risk factors for revision TFR in the short and medium term.
  • Findings can enhance preoperative patient counseling regarding the likelihood of requiring revision surgery for trigger digits.
