    Summary

This study highlights the frequent occurrence of dermatofibromas in black women with systemic lupus erythematosus. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between these conditions and treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Rheumatology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease.
    • Dermatofibromas are common benign skin tumors.
    • The association between SLE and dermatofibromas, particularly in black women, warrants further investigation.

    Observation:

    • Three black women diagnosed with multiple dermatofibromas and systemic lupus erythematosus were studied.
    • In one patient, new dermatofibromas correlated with increased corticosteroid dosage.
    • In another patient, dermatofibromas were present before any treatment for SLE.

    Findings:

    • Histopathologic, ultrastructural, and direct immunofluorescence studies of dermatofibroma lesions were conducted.
    • Studies revealed characteristic dermatofibroma changes but no specific causative agent.
    • The findings suggest a higher prevalence of dermatofibromas in SLE patients than previously recognized.

    Implications:

    • This research indicates a potentially underappreciated link between dermatofibromas and systemic lupus erythematosus.
    • Further investigation into the pathogenesis and clinical significance of this association is recommended.
    • Understanding this relationship may improve patient management and diagnostic approaches for individuals with SLE.
