Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

34
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

2.5K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Medical management of tuberculosis (TB) patients involves a comprehensive approach that includes diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. The specific strategies can vary depending on the type of tuberculosis (latent or active), the patient's overall health status, and other considerations.
Latent tuberculosis infection occurs when TB bacteria are present in a person's body, but are not causing illness or symptoms. It is not contagious, and preventive treatment is crucial to avoid the...

Antimicrobial Effectiveness01:28

Antimicrobial Effectiveness

2
The effectiveness of antimicrobial agents depends on various factors influencing their ability to eliminate microbial populations. Larger microbial populations require more time for complete eradication, emphasizing the importance of population size analysis when evaluating antimicrobial efficacy.Microbial resistance to antimicrobial agents varies significantly. Highly resilient microorganisms include endospores, gram-negative bacteria, and non-enveloped viruses, while prions are exceptionally...

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Unregulated antibiotic use and low awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) challenge Malaysia.
  • Community-based Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) initiatives are vital to combat rising AMR.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of a bespoke online educational seminar on AMS for community pharmacists in Malaysia.
  • To evaluate the impact of the intervention on pharmacists' knowledge and attitudes regarding antimicrobial usage.

Main Methods:

  • A 2-day online educational seminar based on WHO AMS modules was developed.
  • Pre- and post-seminar questionnaires assessed changes in AMS knowledge and attitudes among 528 participating pharmacists.

Main Results:

  • Pharmacists' understanding of antibiotic resistance reversibility increased from 59% to 85.9% (p = .002).
  • Average AMS knowledge scores improved significantly from 5/10 to 8/10 (p < .05).
  • Correct antibiotic selection for UTIs rose from 78% to 90% post-intervention.

Conclusions:

  • The AMS seminar effectively enhanced community pharmacists' knowledge and attitudes.
  • The findings highlight the need for targeted AMS interventions in Malaysia to foster optimal antibiotic practices.
  • Such programs can improve antibiotic use awareness and professional conduct in community pharmacy settings.
