Marital status and substance use are significant factors influencing health outcomes in veteran populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between substance use patterns, marital status, and perceived overall health in retired active-duty veterans.
To identify differential effects of alcohol consumption on health perceptions based on marital status.

Main Methods:

Analysis of national data from a sample of 1,506 retired active-duty veterans.
Statistical examination of the relationship between binge drinking, heavy alcohol use, marital status (widowed, divorced/separated, married), and self-reported overall health.

Main Results:

Among widowed veterans, binge drinking and heavy alcohol use were associated with poorer perceived overall health compared to non-drinking married veterans.
Divorced or separated veterans who engaged in non-binge or binge drinking reported better perceived overall health compared to non-drinking married veterans.

Conclusions:

The impact of alcohol consumption on perceived health in retired veterans is contingent upon marital status.
Clinical strategies should consider marital status when addressing substance use and health in veteran populations.
