- Rheumatology
- Nephrology
- Cardiology
Background:
- Gout is an inflammatory arthritis frequently linked with chronic diseases.
- Co-morbidities include chronic kidney disease (CKD), hypertension, coronary vascular disease, and metabolic syndrome.
- Effective gout management necessitates consideration of these concurrent health conditions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review recent advances in gout therapy.
- To summarize gout treatments with significant clinical impact.
- To highlight the importance of managing gout alongside co-morbidities.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of recent advances in gout management.
- Analysis of existing and novel gout therapies.
- Focus on treatments relevant to clinical practice.
Main Results:
- Recent therapeutic advances demonstrate effectiveness in gout management.
- Both new and established treatments offer significant benefits.
- Consideration of co-morbidities is crucial for successful gout treatment.
Conclusions:
- Effective gout management integrates treatment of acute flares and serum urate lowering.
- Therapeutic strategies must account for associated chronic diseases.
- The reviewed therapies represent impactful options for clinical practice.
Introduction:
Gout is an inflammatory arthritis that is commonly associated with chronic diseases such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), hypertension, coronary vascular disease, and the metabolic syndrome. Therefore, the management of gout (treatment of the acute flare, lowering serum urate [sUA]) needs to take these co-morbid conditions in consideration. Recent advances in gout therapy showed the effectiveness of new and existing therapies in gout management and we will summarize those we consider to have the largest impact on our clinical practice in this article.
