Nurses' Legal Responsibilities I

710
In healthcare, informed consent is a crucial process that involves thoroughly communicating medical treatment options to patients, including benefits, risks, potential side effects, and alternatives. This process enables patients to make well-informed decisions about their care, ensuring they understand the implications of their choices before consenting to or refusing treatment.
The legal responsibilities of a nurse regarding informed consent include the following:

    Summary

Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots can generate informed consent forms for plastic surgery that are shorter and easier to read than those written by surgeons. These AI-generated forms maintain comparable accuracy and completeness, offering a potentially more efficient approach to patient consent.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Informatics
    • Plastic Surgery
    • Artificial Intelligence

    Background:

    • Informed consent is vital for patient surgical care but often complex.
    • Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning offer potential solutions for creating efficient and readable consent forms.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the length, reading level, accuracy, and completeness of AI-generated informed consent forms versus those created by plastic surgeons for common aesthetic procedures.

    Main Methods:

    • A cross-sectional study comparing AI chatbot (ChatGPT-4) generated consent forms with those from the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
    • Evaluated forms for 5 common aesthetic surgeries: liposuction, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, breast lift, and blepharoplasty.

    Main Results:

    • AI-generated forms were significantly shorter (1023 vs 2901 words) and had a lower reading level (11.2 vs 12.5).
    • No significant differences were found in accuracy, completeness, or overall impression scores between AI and surgeon-generated forms.

    Conclusions:

    • AI chatbot-generated informed consent forms for aesthetic plastic surgery are more concise and readable than surgeon-generated forms.
    • AI offers a viable tool for creating accurate and complete consent documents efficiently, without compromising patient understanding of risks, benefits, or alternatives.
