Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Health Informatics
  • Education

Background:

  • Student distress increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Gratitude interventions can support mental health and well-being.
  • Seligman's PERMA model provides a framework for well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the results of a rapidly implemented, no-cost gratitude intervention.
  • To assess the intervention's impact on student well-being using the PERMA model.
  • To evaluate student perceptions of a shared gratitude journaling experience.

Main Methods:

  • A convenience sample of 57 Master of Science in Health Informatics students participated.
  • An online shared gratitude board was used for journaling from November 2020 to April 2021.
  • Post-implementation surveys, quantitative, and qualitative analyses were conducted.

Main Results:

  • The majority of students reported improvements in Positive Emotion (85.72%), Engagement (77.2%), Relationships (67.7%), Meaning (77.2%), and Accomplishment (60%).
  • Over 25% more students would recommend the gratitude board than those who would not.
  • Qualitative analysis revealed students found gratitude in various areas, valued connection, and derived purpose from effort.

Conclusions:

  • A no-cost gratitude board intervention effectively supported student mental health and wellness.
  • Gratitude stimulates positive emotion, facilitating growth and learning.
  • Findings are generalizable to other programs and environments, especially during times of distress.
